Some spiritual gifts are greater than others:

Some spiritual gifts are GREATER than others.

Paul wrote that "God placed some in the church (AS) FIRST, apostles; SECOND, prophets; THIRD, teachers; THEN powers [miracles]; THEN gifts (of) healings, helps, steerings, kinds (of) tongues" (1 Corinthians 12:28), adding to "be-zealous-for THE GREATER GIFTS" (1 Corinthians 12:31).

In this list, from GREATER to lesser, Paul listed:

"FIRST": Apostles.

"SECOND": Prophets.

"THIRD": Teachers.

"THEN": Powers [miracles].

"THEN": Gifts of healings, helps, steerings, kinds of tongues.

A spiritual gift can be greater than another if it edifies more:

A spiritual gift can be GREATER than another if it edifies more.

Paul wrote: "The (one) speaking (in a) tongue IS-EDIFYING HIMSELF, but the (one) prophesying IS-EDIFYING (THE) CHURCH" (1 Corinthians 14:4). Here one spiritual gift is only edifying oneself, while the other is edifying the church. 

Paul then added in the next verse: "the (one) prophesying (IS) GREATER THAN (one) speaking (in) tongues, UNLESS he-interprets in-order-that THE CHURCH MAY-RECEIVE EDIFICATION" (1 Corinthians 14:5). Here Paul indicated that a spiritual gift can be greater if it edifies more. 

Paul wrote that "God placed some in the church (AS) FIRST, APOSTLES; SECOND, PROPHETS" (1 Corinthians 12:28), being GREATER gifts, as those would be the FOUNDATION upon which the church is BUILT or edified, as Paul wrote: "you-are fellow-citizens (with) the holy (ones) and family-members (of) God, HAVING-BEEN-BUILT upon the FOUNDATION (of) the APOSTLES and PROPHETS" (Ephesians 2:19-20).

Gifts can be lesser or greater on the basis that they edify more or less because to EDIFY believers in Christ is one GOAL for which spiritual gifts are given.
