Why it is important for someone to not misidentify their spiritual gifts

Summary:

Spiritual gifts can be described as being given to those who are in Christ, such that everyone in Christ has spiritual gifts. But not everyone has all the same spiritual gifts. There are several ways someone can get to know what spiritual gifts they have

It is important for someone to not misidentify their spiritual gifts for several reasons, as for example if someone may try to exercice a spiritual gift that they do not have:

1) They may have WRONG EXPECTATIONS of what is expected of them to exercise.

2) The GRACE that is supposed to accompany the spiritual gift will not be available.

3) They could inadvertly OVERSTEP THE PLACE that belongs to someone else.

4) They could LEAVE UNATTENDED what they were actually supposed to do.

5) It is possible for someone to be given MORE spiritual gifts than they already have, but someone MAY NOT SEEK to be given a spiritual gift that they mistakenly believe to already have.

You can find more details below:

Everyone in Christ HAS spiritual gifts:

It is important for someone to not misidentify their spiritual gifts:

It is important for someone to not misidentify their spiritual gifts for several reasons, for example:

1) Wrong expectations of what is expected to exercise:

Spiritual gifts are EXPECTED to be EXERCISED.

Spiritual gifts are EXPECTED to be STEWARDED.

However, not everyone has all the same spiritual gifts.

This is important because if someone misidentifies a certain spiritual gift, they might have THE WRONG EXPECTATIONS of the exercise that is expected of them.

Indeed, someone is only expected to exercise the spiritual gifts that they actually have, not the ones they do not have, which is why it is important for someone to not misidentify the spiritual gifts that they have in order to not have the wrong ideas of what is expected from them.

2) Grace will not be available:

Paul wrote about "having different gifts ACCORDING-TO THE GRACE having-been-given (to) us" (Romans 12:6).

The specific spiritual gifts that people have are "ACCORDING-TO THE GRACE having-been-given (to) us" (Romans 12:6), which implies that if someone may try to exercice a spiritual gift that they do not have the GRACE that is supposed to accompany it will not be available

Lacking grace to exercise something can lead someone to notice that:
1) It might get heavy when trying to exercise it.
2) It might lack the same endurance as someone else with the grace which is always available to exercise it.

3) Overstepping the place of another:

Paul wrote that "God PLACED SOME in the church (as) first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then powers [miracles]; then gifts (of) healings, helps, administrations, kinds (of) tongues" (1 Corinthians 12:28).

If someone may try to exercice a spiritual gift that they do not have, they could inadvertly overstep the PLACE that belongs to someone else. Paul wrote that "God PLACED SOME in the church" (1 Corinthians 12:28) to exercice certain specific spiritual gifts, as not everyone has all the same spiritual gifts.

Because everyone has their own PLACE, it is important to not overstep, usurp, or overshadow the PLACE that belongs to someone else.

For example, Judas Iscariot the apostle was only REPLACED after his death. People can be described as having spiritual gifts until death

But what if some people do not exercise their spiritual gifts? Should not somebody else do it in their PLACE? No, as spiritual gifts are expected to be stewarded, and so everyone having spiritual gifts will have to individually answer TO GOD at some point for their use, misuse or lack of use of what they had been entrusted with.

Attempting to take THE PLACE of someone else who is misuing or having a lack of use of their spiritual gifts could also HINDER THEM FROM REPENTING of that. Instead what can be done is TO REMIND THEM to exercise their spiritual gifts, as for example Paul wrote to Timothy: "I-AM-REMINDING YOU TO-BE-REKINDLING the GIFT (of) God which is in you through the laying-on (of) my hands" (2 Timothy 1:6). Indeed, spiritual gifts are expected to be exercised

4) Leaving unattended what is supposed to be exercised:

If someone may try to exercice a spiritual gift that they do not have, they could LEAVE UNATTENDED what they were actually supposed to do.

This is important because somebody else will not exercise the gifts that THEY received. They can be reminded to exercise them, but ultimately THEY are expected to exercise them.

Spiritual gifts are expected to be stewarded, so there is a responsability on the steward to tend to the spiritual gifts that they received, as there can ultimately also be negative consequences for not doing so (but also positive consequences if they are stewarded faithfully).

5) Not seeking to be given a spiritual gift that they mistakenly believe to already have:

It is possible for someone to be given MORE spiritual gifts than they already have.

But someone MAY NOT SEEK to be given a spiritual gift that they mistakenly believe to already have. This is why it is also important for someone to not to misidentify the spiritual gifts that they have.
